What is putty made of?
Putty consists of the three basic ingredients plaster, cement and synthetic resin. This results in a mushy mixture. Putty is intended for closing cracks and holes or other unevenness and is therefore suitable for extensive use. A distinction is also made between flowable and stable compound. Levelling compound is used for smoothing and levelling over a wide area. The stable compound is suitable for the repair and filling of cracks, damaged areas and holes. The compound is applied with a spatula and smoothed after curing.
Differences
Putty can be bought as a finished product or mixed by yourself. This is stirred with water and mixed. These types of mass also dry at different rates, resulting in different surface textures. In addition, a distinction is made between synthetic resin-bound, plaster-bound and cement-bound masses.
Synthetic resin-bonded filler compound
is regarded as an all-rounder among the fillers. It is suitable for both exterior and interior use and for wood, mineral substrates and metal. Synthetic resin-bonded fillers are already mixed and plastic is finely dispersed in them as a binding agent.
Plaster-bonded filler
is considered the best choice for indoor use. Due to its pH-neutrality it is suitable for all materials and does not cause discolouration when wallpapering later.
Cement-bound filler
is considered the choice for floors, wet rooms and outdoor areas. Because moisture is no problem for this type of filler.
