Today it is increasingly common to use wallpapers in ways they were not designed for. For example new and unusual methods of paperhanging. Thus, individual and creative wall designs can be created. Borders set accentuated highlights and combinations of different wallpaper designs create elaborate impressions. Once an idea has developed it then has to be put into practice. But how? Well, what seemed so easy in the magazine or on TV actually is. It’s all about preparation. Note: Some ways of paperhanging differ from the regular procedure and need some precautions to be fulfilled.
Let’s talk about wallpapering horizontally, for example. Do wallpapers always have to be applied vertically? No, because papered horizontally they can have their own charm. Of course, not every wallpaper is suitable for this technique. But which are, can be figured out easily by having a look at the package insert. Very often there is a symbol, which indicates whether it is possible or not. Even if there is no such symbol, it is usually easy to identify wallpapers that can be papered horizontally. Striped or wood wallpapers, for example, are typically suited very well for this purpose. Naturally, which wallpapers will be used is a question of individual preferences and taste.
The preparation necessary for papering horizontally is very similar to that of papering vertically. An appropriate selection of tools and proper pre-treatment of the underground are decisive for a good outcome. With this in mind let’s come to the major differences between the two methods. There are six points that you have to be aware of. 1. The wallpaper paste has to be more viscous than usually to provide higher adhesive power. 2. While the paste is soaking in, the width of the wall can be measured and the wallpaper can be cut into the desired length. 3. The cut wallpaper then has to be furled to ease the process of papering. 4. Using this method no wallpapers that require a soaking time can be used because the wallpaper paste has to be applied to the wall. 5. The pre-treated wall now has to be pasted horizontally so that the wallpaper can be rolled out on it. After every width of wallpaper that has been put on the wall it is necessary to check for any irregularities. 6. It is advised to begin at the ceiling and then work down to the floor. With these points in mind wallpapering should be easy and the outcome will be great.
